Executive Summary

We as Acme Corporation have a lot of secret information about how our weapon systems work. The logistics of how we deliver these systems anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice are a closely guarded secret.

At present we do not have a secure storage facility for this information. It is kept written on pieces of paper in Dave’s office cabinet.

Storage of secrets as paper documents has caused 5 service impacts to customers documented in the following COEs. COE00001, COE00002, COE00003, COE00004, COE00005.

I propose we design and implement a secret store to handle this information for us securely. The information will then be able to be accessed via secure terminals.

We will keep the paper documents as an offline off site backup for disaster recovery purposes.

The projects name will be S.E.C.R.E.T.S which stands for Secure, Encrypted, Checksumed, Repudiation, End-to-End, Transfer, Service.

One of the engineers wanted to use a Celtic Pantheon god’s named mixed with a location from the lord of the rings.

Background

In COE00001 it was discovered that the entire company’s corpus of trade secrets is being stored in a small office cabinet. The engineer responsible for this cabinet frequently left it unlocked. This led us to temporarily losing the cabinet during an office move.

When interviewing the engineer who owns the cabinet they told us that the secret documents arrive via post addressed to them. Not knowing what to do with them or who to contact about it. They stored them for safe keeping.

When we inquired with the postal service it turned out that the sender of the documents is a subsidiary company we acquired back in 1995. This postal process had been setup since then but the employee responsible has since resigned to start an IPA brewery.

Next Steps

  1. Assign engineer head count to project S.E.C.R.E.T.S.
  2. Write a 6 pager.
  3. Buy Dave a second storage cabinet.
